Multi-scale Colorectal Tumour Segmentation Using a Novel Coarse to Fine Strategy

چکیده
Colorectal cancer is the third most common form of cancer worldwide [1]. In general, there are two challenges in automatic detection of colorectal cancer in histopathological images. One is the enormous volume of data which the algorithms have to cope with. The second is that in histopathology slides, cancerous tissue can look similar to noncancerous tissue. In this paper, we propose an efficient and novel coarse to fine framework to address the problem of colorectal tumour segmentation for the purpose of tumour detection, as shown in Fig 1. In this way, we propose the use of colour modelling and morphological operations to extract the initial Region of interest (ROI). In order to reduce the noisy margin, we use Euclidean distance based histograms as a criterion. Further, to perform tumour segmentation at the best resolution, we deploy a Convergence Index (CI) approach to detect nuclei by fitting circles. At the tumour classification stage, when the resolution is at a high level, we use a rotation invariant feature and random projection based l2-norm sparse representation technique for more accurate segmentation. The main contributions of our work include: 1) a multi-scale strategy for tumour segmentation, which simulates the decision making of a pathologist from the coarse-to-fine processing, and 2) a novel Rotation Invariant Raw Statistics (RIRS) feature and random projection based l2-norm sparse representation method. These make the tumour classification process more effective than other published methods. The RIRS-pixel feature can be calculated by:

A Hybrid Multi-Scale Segmentation Approach for Remotely Sensed Imagery
The general image segmentation approach used in other domains may not be applicable to the remote sensing field, which is due to the following factors: remotely sensed data is multi-spectral, always very large in size, and in multi-scale as well. How to quickly and efficiently segment remotely sensed imagery is still a big issue to be solved. Based on human vision mechanism, a new hybrid multi-...

A complete and accurate analysis of the complex spatial structure of heterogeneous hydrocarbon reservoirs requires detailed geological models, i.e. fine resolution models. Due to the high computational cost of simulating such models, single resolution up-scaling techniques are commonly used to reduce the volume of the simulated models at the expense of losing the precision. Several multi-scale ...
متن کاملSegmentation of Coarse and Fine Scale Features Using Multi-scale Diffusion and Mumford-Shah
Here we present a segmentation algorithm that uses multiscale diffusion with the Mumford-Shah model. The image data inside and outside a surface is smoothed by minimizing an energy functional using a partial differential equation that results in a trade-off between smoothing and data fidelity. We propose a scale-space approach that uses a good deal of diffusion as its coarse scale space and tha...
متن کاملCoarse-to-Fine Segmentation With Shape-Tailored Scale Spaces
We formulate a general energy and method for segmentation that is designed to have preference for segmenting the coarse structure over the fine structure of the data, without smoothing across boundaries of regions. The energy is formulated by considering data terms at a continuum of scales from the scale space computed from the Heat Equation within regions, and integrating these terms over all ...

Segmentation of vegetated areas is inevitable in precision agriculture and has high importance in urban area with social and environmental aspects. This paper addresses the segmentation of fused high resolution multispectral satellite images into distinct regions such as vegetation, buildings and barren land. Even though the IHS based fusion of satellite imagery improves the visual interpretati...
